How to use differences in wingbars to tell apart often-confused birds

Every birdwatcher quickly learns to recognize wingbars. Some birds have them (and it’s obvious when they do); other birds don’t. But if you look a little more carefully, you will notice that there are different versions of wingbars, and telling one from the other isn’t as simple as determining presence or absence.
