On the basis of plumage coloration and mitochondrial DNA variation, four maingroups are recognized within the Fox Sparrow (Passerella iliaca): the red group (iliaca, RE),sooty group (unalaschcensis, SO), thick-billed (megarhyncha, TB), and slate-colored (schistacea,SC).
