The evolutionary history of Eurasian redstarts, Phoenicurus

Common Redstart (Phoenicurus phoenicurus) Science Article 2

The bird genus Phoenicurus comprises 10 to 11 species that occur from Europe through Asia. To resolve theirphylogenetic relationships, their phylogeography and the tempo of their evolution, the mitochondrial cytochrome-b gene wassequenced for 16 taxa. The Bayesian maximum likelihood tree and neighbor-joining dendrogram computed from the resultingdata are nearly identical. The genus seems to have diverged from turdine stock approximately 5.25
